Keep it calm and DO NOT DYI Part 1 –- DO NOT DYI Month - UA
Sometimes clients or prospects recur to the double-edged method of DYI or Do It Yourself, as the fast and cheapest way to solve any problems they may face. You can find excellent resources that can tell you step by step on who to change a doorknob, change a spare tire, maybe even to repair some scratches of your car, but there is an area where a lot of people get confused and try the DIY method to solve a marketing strategy or create a logo, manage their identity or simply, put into an add and create that graphic content when they need to update it onto their website.
Not the saviors but the helpers
As a practitioner of the creativity trade and the slow movement in the economy, I have to say that we have to come with more stimulating approaches, to assure every possible prospect, that we are here to help and we have the tools and mechanisms to make it work.
We are here to provide a service that required lots of study and years of experience. This doesn’t mean that we are the “vedettes” of graphic communication and we know everything. Being humble and learn how to listen to a prospect is essential too.
This is probably one of the reasons why a lot of potential prospects are tired of trying to talk to a brick wall, and why prospects choose to go DIY.
And sometimes this happens.
Very often a prospect will ask a niece to copy any clip art found on the internet, place it with some fonts, and maybe throw a kitty, just because is “viral and everyone likes cats”. Unfortunately, to get the impact you want to create, the image you want to project, DYI is not the best option for your business.
Out there, you still can find people that have dedicated most of their lives to help. No matter what is, remember to stay professional.
A few tips here to stay on top od the game and reflect your professionalism.
- Stay humble.
- Listen carefully to the problem before any conclusions.
- Assure your clients with a method.
- Learn how to communicate with your client.
- … and above all remember, you don’t know anything, John Snow.
